Drinking water is really important, but bottled water is terrible for the environment, costs you a fortune, and in todays world is morally wrong. A brilliant reusable bottle is required, one made from sound materials incorporating great design. H 2 Onya bottles are made from food-grade 304 stainless steel the material of choice for the food and beverage industries. They don’t need to be lined and will never retain or leach flavours. No matter how many times you refill them, no matter what you put into them, the drinks in your h2Onya will always stay fresh and delicious. For the health of you and your water, it is best to avoid plastic and aluminum they are associated with a host diseases and illness. With the perfect materials at hand, we set about designing the perfect bottle to match. A curved ergonomic design means they don’t easily slip out of your hands. If they do get dropped, the base must be flat and engineered to hinder common knocks. We want this bottle to last you a long time, so it’s also manufactured from the thickest possible grade of stainless steel, yet still as light weight as most reusable bottles. The whole H2Onya range have a wide mouth so are very easy to clean. This also helps if you like throwing in extras like ice, fruit or even smoothies. We also think it’s important your bottle should look really good!
Drinking plenty of water is essential for life – every process in the human body requires water to enable the basic chemical reactions to take place. So whether fluids are in a natural or man made environment, they are active substances that readily leach materials to and from their surroundings.
Traditional materials for portable bottles are Plastic and Aluminum. Food safe Plastics by nature are soft materials (recycling codes #1 PET, #2 HDPE, #4 LDPE and #5 PP) Therefore to make a durable drinking bottle Polycarbonate (#7 PC) is used as it is considered virtually shatterproof. What particularly makes PC so strong is a plasticiser commonly called BPA which also makes it easy to mould. An environmental estrogen, also known as an endocrine disrupter is a growing world wide concern. Studies have linked low-dose BPA exposure with such effects as: permanent changes to genital tract; increase prostate weight; decline in testosterone; breast cells predisposed to cancer; prostate cells more sensitive to hormones and cancer; and hyperactivity.
Everyone. Bisphenol A is found in many everyday products including food cans, plastic water containers and baby bottles. A study in the US found that 95% of people tested had been exposed to BPA. Soft plastic bottles certified as food safe often have a chemical taste to them and get tainted from drinks over time. Single use PET bottles are not designed for re-use -they harbour bacteria. We consider plastic an inappropriate material to make a bottle from. For a more thorough guide on BPA click here.
For more than 90 years, the link between Alzheimers Disease and Aluminium has been pondered, researched and discussed. Whilst the link is neither confirmed nor discounted, the 90 year debate goes on. In our non-medical opinion – what we DO know is: Aluminium is a neurotoxin. Exercising a caution in its intake appears prudent. Have a look here for more public health information from Queensland’s Health Department. Aluminum bottles are lined with either plastic (a BPA risk) or ceramic material. In order to keep this lining from perishing, only water can be used in an aluminum bottle. Acidic liquids such as fruit juice will perish a lining and make the Aluminium more bioavailable. It is also important to know the ph of the water entering your bottle. (During our market research, we met a lady who filled her aluminum bottle with water from the same water that we drink in our city that perished her lining leaving it flapping around in the bottom of her bottle ) Most aluminum bottles have a small mouth piece so diligently inspecting a lining is nearly impossible. Aluminum is also one of the soft metals so your bottle is likely to get dented very easily over time. A dented bottle is very likely to damage a ceramic lining. Anyone familiar with drinking from a lined bottle will know they do not always keep water fresh, they can leach or retain flavors. We consider aluminum a flawed material to make a bottle from.
